In the Judean Desert, only about 20 minutes east of Jerusalem, lies one of Israel's most beautiful and surprising streams: Nahal Prat, fed by a spring known as Ein Prat. Water bubbles up directly from the rock here, forming a natural pool, then continues flowing all year round, even during the hottest stretches of summer, a genuinely rare occurrence in such a dry desert region. The most popular family route takes between two and three hours and works wonderfully for kids, since it includes truly shallow pools where even the youngest children can splash and play safely, alongside deeper pools nearby for real swimming under adult supervision. Along the trail, hikers can spot the remains of ancient water channels carved directly into the rock thousands of years ago, back in the Second Temple period, built to carry precious water from one place to another, clear evidence that people back then already understood clever engineering. Further along the stream sit the ruins of an ancient monastery from the Byzantine period, founded by monks who chose to live in desert solitude more than 1,600 years ago, one of the very earliest monastic communities in the entire region. There are also remains of a British water-pumping station, built much later during the British Mandate period. This combination of cool flowing water, surprisingly green plants, and layers of thousands of years of history right along the trail makes Ein Prat both a fun hike and a small history lesson at once.
