Long before phones, screens, or even paper, people were already obsessed with games. Archaeologists have found game boards more than 5,000 years old in Egyptian tombs - including one buried alongside the young pharaoh Tutankhamun. The game was called Senet, played on a board of thirty squares, with pieces moved using thrown sticks instead of dice. Egyptians believed the game was so important that you might need to keep playing it in the afterlife. Chess has an equally winding history. It began in India around 1,500 years ago as a game called chaturanga, where each piece represented a different part of an army - elephants, chariots, foot soldiers. Traders and travelers carried the game west to Persia, then into the Arab world, and eventually to Europe, where the pieces slowly turned into the kings, queens, bishops, and knights we know today. Even older than chess is Go, a Chinese strategy game played for over 2,500 years on a grid of intersecting lines. The rules are almost embarrassingly simple - place black or white stones and try to surround your opponent's territory - yet the strategy runs so deep that it took the world's most powerful computers years of practice before they could finally beat top human Go players. Why has every human civilization invented games? Researchers think it comes down to a few things: games let us practice planning and quick decisions in a safe, low-stakes way, they satisfy our love of friendly competition, and, maybe most importantly, they give people a reason to sit down together. Thousands of years later, that reason still works.
