An Octopus Can Open a Jar — and It Doesn't Only Think With Its Brain
English
An octopus has roughly nine different 'brains': one central brain inside its head, plus a large cluster of neurons in each of its eight arms. The amazing result is that each arm can almost 'decide' on its own how to grab something, taste it (yes, octopuses have taste sensors on their arms!), or how to escape a dangerous situation, without the central brain needing to send an exact command for every small movement. Octopuses are famous for solving tricky problems in surprisingly clever ways: in lab and aquarium experiments they've managed to open tightly sealed glass jars to reach food inside, found ways to sneak out of their tank and back in without anyone noticing, and even recognized and remembered specific people who were kind or unkind to them, sometimes for months. But perhaps the most surprising ability of all is how an octopus can change the color and texture of its skin in less than a second to hide almost anywhere, among coral, on sand, even on artificial surfaces like concrete rocks. They do this using special skin cells called chromatophores that can expand and contract rapidly to change the color the skin reflects. Scientists are still learning a huge amount about octopuses, because their distributed brain is so different from ours that it's hard to know exactly what the world looks like from their point of view.
