If you had to guess the toughest animal on Earth, you probably wouldn't think of a tiny, almost invisible creature that looks a bit like a fluffy eight-legged bear. And yet tardigrades — nicknamed "water bears" — are quite possibly the most resilient animals known to science. An average tardigrade is less than a millimeter long, so you can only see one under a microscope, and its natural habitat is the thin film of water on damp moss or lichen. Still, this tiny creature has survived lab experiments after being exposed to temperatures above 150 degrees Celsius and below minus 200 degrees — temperatures that would kill almost any other living thing within seconds. Their secret is an incredible ability to enter a state called cryptobiosis, where they shrink their bodies, squeeze nearly all the water out of their cells, and slow their metabolism down to almost nothing — a kind of deep suspended animation that can last for years. In this state, they can survive radiation levels that would be lethal to humans, and even go without any water at all for decades. In 2007, European scientists even sent tardigrades into outer space on a satellite and exposed them directly to the vacuum of space and cosmic radiation, with zero protection. Some of them survived, and once back on Earth, simply woke back up as if nothing had happened.
