Imagine a classroom that has to decide where to go on the yearly class trip — the beach or the mountains. The fairest way to decide is to give every student one vote and count the results. That's basically the idea behind democratic elections, just scaled up to an entire country with millions of people. In democratic elections, adult citizens get the right to vote to choose who will represent them — in a parliament, a city government, or as head of state. Every citizen gets exactly one equal vote, no matter how much money they have, how much education, or where they live. That's a core principle: every vote counts exactly the same. On election day, people go to a polling station — usually a school or another public building near their home — and vote using a secret ballot, so nobody else knows who they voted for unless they choose to share it. After the polls close, representatives from different sides count the votes together, to make sure the count is fair and transparent. Whoever or whichever party gets the most votes usually wins, and their job is to work for all citizens — including the ones who didn't vote for them. And even though a single vote can feel small and unimportant, when millions of people think that way and vote anyway, together they're the ones who decide what their country looks like.
