NASA Is Building a Moon Base: More Than 20 Robot Landings Are on the Way

NASA, the United States space agency, is working on a big plan called the Moon Base program. The idea is to send a wave of robots to the Moon first, before any astronauts go back there. In June 2026, NASA awarded almost $600 million in contracts to private companies that build spacecraft called landers, which can land on the Moon without any people aboard. One of the landers, called Blue Moon Mark 1 Endurance, comes from Blue Origin, the space company started by Jeff Bezos, and it could carry the very first mission in the program, called Moon Base I, as early as this fall. Other companies building landers include Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, Firefly Aerospace, and Voyager Lunar Systems. Altogether, NASA is planning more than 20 robotic Moon landings by 2029. The first landing site is near a place called the Shackleton Connecting Ridge, close to the Moon's South Pole, where scientists think there might be frozen water hiding in the shadows. Each robotic mission will test something astronauts will eventually need, like landing accurately, talking to Earth quickly, driving rovers over rocky ground, and building power systems that survive the Moon's extreme temperatures. The goal is to make everything safer and ready before NASA sends astronauts to land on the Moon again, which could happen as soon as 2028 - the first time since the Apollo missions more than fifty years ago.
